Songs of Edinburgh

It was a great joy to join with Brian Bannatyne-Scott and Michał Gajzler in our recent recital at the wonderful setting of Saint Michael’s Church, Edinburgh. I look forward to many more.

Our selections for this concert included songs by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Gustav and Alma Mahler, Ottorino Respighi, and F G Scott.

The finale to our recital was the song cycle, Songs of Edinburgh, by Tom Cunningham with words by Alexander McCall Smith. This was a wonderfully evocative piece to sing with each song illustrating a photograph from Edinburgh’s past based on the beautifully illustrated book, A Work of Beauty, including poems by Mr McCall Smith.

Many thanks to all at Saint Michael’s for hosting the concert. We are most grateful to Alexander McCall Smith both for financial support for the superb concert programme available to the audience on the night, and for providing funds for a recording of Songs of Edinburgh to appear later this year.
