WHERE GREAT MEZZOS MEET | RECITAL WITH DAME SARAH CONNOLLY AND JULIUS DRAKE

  • Middle Temple Lane London, England, EC4Y 9AT United Kingdom (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

One of the UK’s most distinguished mezzo-sopranos, Dame Sarah Connolly, takes the stage with a star of the next generation, Beth Taylor. Sarah was made a DBE in the 2017 Birthday Honours and has sung in most of the world’s leading opera houses and concert halls. Notable among her stellar career was her appearance as guest soloist at the BBC Last Night of the Proms in 2009.

Beth recently came to prominence in the grand final of the 2023 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, and since that moment has made debuts at Carnegie Hall and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and worked with conductors including Edward Gardner, Sir Simon Rattle and Kirill Petrenko.

No stranger to Temple Music, Julius Drake enjoys an international reputation as one of the finest instrumentalists in his field, collaborating with many of the world’s leading artists, both in recital and on disc. His passionate interest in song has led to invitations to devise song series for Wigmore Hall, London; The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam; 92nd St Y, New York; and the Pierre Boulez Saal, Berlin.

This Concert is sponsored by Rosamund Horwood-Smart KC.

SONG RECITAL | WESTBOURNE MUSIC

SONG RECITAL | WESTBOURNE MUSIC

In the Shadows is a concert programme that highlights the historical underrepresentation of women in classical music. It features rarely performed pieces by composers Pauline Viardot, Clara Wieck Schumann, Lili Boulanger, Nadia Boulanger, Ethel Smyth, Germaine Tailleferre and Alma Mahler, shedding light on the significant contributions these composers made to music history, contributions which have long been overlooked.

Performed by Scottish mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor, the concert is grounded in a commitment to artistic excellence, diversity, and inclusion. By reviving the music of forgotten or lesser-known composers, In the Shadows invites audiences to engage with a richer and more representative musical heritage.

Due to unforseen circumstances, there is a change to the pianist featured in this recital, to be announced in due course.
